A revolutionary scientific explanation of psychic phenomena and the nature of human consciousness.
Although much is now known about the brain, relatively little has been determined about where consciousness comes from: What is the source of the "I" in our internal monologue? How does something as nonmaterial as consciousness arise from something material like the brain? Dr. Diane Powell, a Johns Hopkins–trained neuroscientist, has brilliantly reassessed the meaning and nature of consciousness by exploring research on the workings of psychic phenomena.
Over the past few decades several well-designed and rigorously supervised experiments have documented the existence of telepathic interconnection, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis, and out-of-body experiences. Mainstream science has largely ignored these data because they all defy the traditional model of consciousness as being solely the product of brain chemistry.
Building from these experiments, Powell constructs a new theory of consciousness. I ntegrating concepts from physics, neuroscience, and other disciplines, she offers an insightful and intriguing explanation of ESP, provocatively claiming that the existence of psychic abilities expands our understanding and appreciation of consciousness. Psychic abilities are also consistent with findings in modern physics: For example, psychokinesis implies that consciousness is a type of force field, while precognition suggests that the past, present, and future exist concurrently.
Eye-opening in its conclusions and exciting in its implications, The ESP Enigma will challenge your preconceived notions and expand your mind.
illustrate how one would calculate the odds if they had these numbers, I derived some conservative hypothetical numbers. Let’s say the odds of a boy being named Jim are 1 in 50, the odds of marrying someone named Linda are 1 in 100, the odds of divorce are 1 in 2, and the odds of remarriage to someone named Betty are 1 in 300. The odds of that combination are derived by multiplying the odds of each component, and equal 1 in 3 million. Even that is too conservative for the Jim twins, because it
unconscious thoughts can be as powerful as our conscious ones, but how they can temporarily cause loss of function to prevent a thought from becoming conscious is unknown. • Our thoughts bring about structural changes in our brains. Jeffrey Schwartz, M.D., took PET scans of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder before and after ten weeks of mindfulness-oriented cognitive-behavioral therapy, a technique that taught them how to redirect their thinking and behavior. The scans demonstrated
just synchronicities, or as psychic communication between the fish. These interpretations would be artifacts of our ignorance. Bohm argued that we similarly make false interpretations about the universe because we don’t consciously see the deeper level of reality where everything is interconnected and unified.5 Evidence for interconnectivity initially came from research on the forces that hold subatomic particles together. Scientists investigated these forces by using giant accelerators to
the world than we ever imagined; they suggest that all of space and time is represented in our personal consciousness field, even though most of it is unconscious. THE COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious came from recognition that our unconscious contains more than just our personal unconscious. Jung saw that even when there hasn’t been opportunity for cultural transmission, there are archetypes or themes that are expressed universally in dreams, the
