the social product of the interweaving of the lives of many people over many generations. It is remarkable that this dramatic structure, the very product of the interaction of the behaviour and experience of people, is, as a rule, not experienced by, and is unknown to, the very people who generate and perpetuate it. In this type of inquiry the dates of public family events do not take us far. We must not ignore them, but we must not be deceived by them. Jack and Jill were married in 1960. There
anywhere, as long as we are somewhere. We would rather be anyone, as long as we are someone. We can cling to being a Christian, a married man, a housewife, a dutiful daughter, to attributions, even unpleasant ones. But we, by the very fact that we “cling” to such identities, testify in the very act of so doing, that we who are clinging, are not that to which we cling. Our family of origin has done its best. It has given us its range of distinctions, options, identities, definitions, rules,
experimental model, of a naturally occurring phenomenon in many families. In the family situation, however, the hypnotists (the parents) are already hypnotized (by their parents) and are carrying out their instructions, by bringing their children up to bring their children up … in such a way, that includes not realizing that one is carrying out instructions: since one instruction is not to think that one is thus instructed. This is a state easily induced under hypnosis. One may tell someone to
is, is induction, far more potent than what they tell him to do. Thus through the attribution: “You are naughty”, they are effectively telling him not to do what they are ostensibly telling him to do. We are likely to find that such words as: “You are naughty”, are the least of it. One is likely to find that the child is being induced to behave as he is by tactile-kinetic-olfactory-visual signals: and that this is part of a whole “secret” communications network, dissociated from the official
graves. They may be implanted before one is five years of age, with instructions not to begin to act them out until 50 years later. The foregoing examples were among the simplest I could find, and both are further simplified in recounting. Almost all of us live almost all of our lives in families. First our family of origin; then, when we marry and have children, our so-called nuclear family, the family of origin for our children. Through this chain of family systems, the fundamental rules
